► (1744-1803) Filósofo y escritor alemán, una de las figuras más destacadas del prerromanticismo. Poeta, crítico e historiador, su concepción de la humanidad como conjunto armónico y del sentimiento como fuente del arte y el lenguaje, están plasmadas en toda su obra. Ejerció gran influencia en el grupo literario Sturm und Drang. Herder destacó la comunidad particular con su lenguaje, religión y costumbres: el vehículo de la cultura es el «Volk» o nación diferenciada. Su obra Canciones populares (1778-79) es una compilación de canciones de todas las naciones.

Crítico y filósofo alemán. Formado en teología y literatura, laboró al comienzo como profesor y predicador en Riga. Mientras se desempeñaba como predicador en la corte de Bückeburg, publicó algunos trabajos, como
Plastik [Sobre arte] (1778) y
Ensayo sobre el origen del lenguaje (1772), que lo transformaron en la figura dominante del movimiento literario
Sturm und Drang. En 1770 conoció a
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, quien sería su colega por muchos años; juntos colaborarían en sentar las bases del
romanticismo alemán. Con la ayuda de Goethe, consiguió un puesto en Weimar en 1776.

Ideas sobre la filosofía de la historia de la humanidad (1784–91) obras en las que Herder intenta mostrar que la naturaleza y la historia obedecen a un sistema de leyes, lo señalan como un innovador de la filosofía de la historia y como un precursor de la idea de que lo que define a un pueblo es una cultura común, y no las fronteras políticas. Su posterior alejamiento de Goethe desembocó en una amarga enemistad con la totalidad del movimiento clásico de la poesía y la filosofía alemanas.s.
